There are steps you can take to reduce or avoid when you have neck pain so you don’t cause more pain. The choices you make after getting neck pain could make the problem worse or extend your recovery. Here are some things you should not do if you experience this common symptom, so you can get relief sooner.
Slouching at Work
Unfortunately, if you work at a computer all day, as many people do, improper posture can be all too easy to establish as a habit. However, bringing the shoulders and head forward for long periods of time will only prolong and exacerbate your neck pain because this posture puts immense strain on your upper back and neck muscles, which need to stabilize your head.
You may not be able to shorten the time you work at a computer, but you can sit or stand with good posture. Keep your head and shoulders back to ease the tension in your neck. Every hour or so, reset your posture to prevent falling into bad habits.
Sleeping on Too Many Pillows
Sleep can play a huge role in recovering from many injuries, including neck pain. However, getting proper rest can be difficult when you have neck pain, and having an excessive number of pillows will only make it harder.
Your head should basically be aligned with your spine (if you sleep on your side). Sleeping on your back can make finding the sweet spot more challenging because your head should be slightly elevated but not too much. If you have trouble identifying the right number and firmness of pillows you need, ask your partner to help or your chiropractor for advice.
Spending a Lot of Time Texting
These days, technology is unavoidable; however, using it too often can make neck pain worse or last longer than it otherwise would. Not only do many people experience eye strain from looking down at smartphone screens, but they also place more stress on their necks.
Especially if you already have neck pain, try to limit the amount of time you spend on your phone scrolling through social media, reading, or texting.
Waiting for the Pain to Go Away on Its Own
One of the worst things you can do is try to power through the pain alone. In some situations, the neck pain may subside—eventually—but in many others, neck pain can become constant or chronic. Working with a chiropractor from the start can help you overcome this pain and help you enjoy a higher quality of life!
Now that you know what actions can cause or complicate neck pain, you can make choices that will reduce your discomfort. The smartest decision you can make is to contact a chiropractor. They can realign your nervous system, educate you on proper posture and stretches, and help you find relief faster.
