Benefits of Massage Therapy
Stress takes a toll on your body, especially over time. Tightness in the muscles on its own brings discomfort and problems with mobility, but this issue can lead to other back, neck, or spinal problems. Fortunately, when massage therapy is coupled with chiropractic knowledge and care, it can be used to correct issues with your nerves, muscles, and joints in addition to relieving stress.
Not only can massage therapy help you deal with existing pain, but it can also be used to prevent future pain or injury by keeping the tissues around joints and the spine functioning properly. By taking a proactive, preventive approach, you can help your body cope with stress, injury, and other issues in a healthier way.
How Massage Therapy Works
During your initial evaluation, Dr. Wills may recommend massage therapy as part of your comprehensive treatment plan along with physical therapy to improve your flexibility and comfort. If you choose to move forward with massage therapy, we will go through the details of the process, including number and frequency of treatments. Through gliding, kneading muscles, and hand pressure, he can also make chiropractic adjustments, manipulate the spine or joints, and even decompress the spine.
Massage therapy can address many conditions, including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc problems, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, back pain, bursitis, pain during pregnancy, pinched nerves, scoliosis, sciatica, shoulder pain, spondylosis, tendonitis, strains, sprains, stenosis, subluxations, and whiplash.

Massage Therapy FAQs
Here are some of our responses to the most commonly asked questions about massage therapy. If you want to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team for additional information.
Does Massage Therapy Hurt?
Massage therapy is definitely not meant to hurt, but patients can experience different sensations during treatment. What feels like plenty of pressure on one patient may feel too light on another. While one patient may want a deeper tissue massage, another may find it a little too painful. In the beginning of and throughout the massage, Kathleen will try to gauge your tolerance and preferred level of pressure, and she doesn’t want to cause you pain. However, you may experience some moments of discomfort as your soft tissues release tension and stress.
Am I a Good Candidate for Massage Therapy?
Most patients with soft tissue problems can undergo massage therapy safely. However, under certain circumstances, this treatment might not be a good idea. For example, if you are sick (with a fever, cold, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example) or have an infectious skin condition, treatment in general will be postponed until you recover. If you have cuts, bruises, or an injury, the area may be avoided to prevent further harm and pain.
Some medical conditions, such as heart or respiratory problems, epilepsy, and cancer, may disqualify you from massage therapy. If you have one of these, we’ll need a note from your physician clearing you for this treatment.
What Should I Wear?
As much as possible, we encourage our patients to wear comfortable clothing. For massage therapy specifically, however, it matters less because you may be asked to remove some or most of your clothes to give us unimpeded access to your back, neck, or other treatment areas. As needed, blankets or towels will be provided to maintain privacy. If you are wearing any jewelry, you will need to take it off before treatment starts.
Could I Fall Asleep During Massage Therapy?
Although treatment can be extremely relaxing on your muscles, it is unlikely that you’ll fall asleep while receiving massage therapy because you will likely be engaged, whether through instruction, questions, or the level of pressure applied to the treatment area. Because muscles and soft tissues can store stress as well as movement strain, the release of this tension may bring up certain emotions or bring the cause of your mobility and stress issues to mind, helping you truly heal.
